2) Consider the following Darcy apparatus containing soil saturated with water. The porosity of the soil is 0.3 and the steady-state flow is in the direction indicated by the arrows. Cross-sectional area-A ΔΙ DATUM (2-0) If the pressure head and elevation head at point 1 are 3 m and 1 m, respectively, calculate the hydraulic head at point 1. If the hydraulic head at point 2 is 3 m, the length of the column is 1.5 m and the linear velocity is 1 m/day, calculate the hydraulic conductivity. Next, consider the case where the column as a whole is heterogeneous by assuming that the hydraulic conductivity of the shaded region (K2) of the Darcy apparatus has a hydraulic conductivity 10 times lower than the hydraulic conductivity in the non-shaded region (Ki) of the apparatus. (The divisioin between the shaded and nonshaded portions of the column is at the columns midpoint). You may also assume that the Darcy velocity and the hydraulic gradient have not changed from the previous parts of this problem. What are the hydraulic conductivities of the shaded and nonshaded regions of the column? a. b. c.
