A 30 m long, 0.50 cm diameter copper cable running East-West carries 120 A of electric current directed West. At the location of the cable, the Earths magnetic field is 0.50 x 10-4 T directed at a 60 degree angle below the northward horizontal. (a) What are the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the cable due to the Earths magnetic field? Illustrate your answer with a carefully drawn and labeled diagram showing the cable, magnetic field, and magnetic force on a N-S, Up-Down set of coordinate axes seen from the West end of the cable (b) How does this force compare with the cables weight? Should this force be considered when designing mechanical supports for the cable? Coppers density is 8.9 x 10s kg/m3.] (c) More realistically, the cable is suspended from two poles 30 m apart. It hangs down in the shape called a catenary. (The total length of the cable is therefore more than 30 m.) Assuming the magnetic field is uniform in the region of the cable, would the magnetic force on it be the same as when it was assumed to be straight? If so, why? If not, describe
