The inflow and outflow to the pond have constant flow rates of Q lms .Excavation near the pond causes a slug of sediment-laden water to enter the pond directly at the inlet. The slug volume is V m and the slugs sediment concentration is Ci-10 gm3. As the sediment moves through the pond it is lost through deposition to the bed following a first-order reaction with rate constant k10% s. You withdraw water for your home use at the outflow Assume there is minimal circulation in the pond and it acts as a perfect plug flow reactor. Describe the sediment load observed in your drinking water (i.e., at the outlet), by answering the following questions: What is the peak concentration of sediment (gm-3) in your drinking water? b. At what time after the release does the peak concentration reach the outlet? c. If the detection limit is 0.5 mg/m, for how long would you find sediment in your drinking water?
