Afflux is the net differential water-surface elevation between the upstream and downstream sections of a constriction to a flow. A 15 m wide rectangular canal has a two-span bridge at a section. (A two-span bridge across a distance has two spans with a single support between the spans). The bridge support (pier) is 0.80 m wide and its coefficient of drag CD -2.0. The drag force on the bridge pier is CpAp/2 where A is the projected area of the pier offered to the flow. (Hint: The elevation change is less than 10% of the depth.)
