Case Study 4

At pick-up time one afternoon, two-and-a-half year old Rocco’s father Giovanni pulls you aside and quickly mentions that his son has just been diagnosed with autism. He does not provide much detail and appears very concerned with maintaining the family’s privacy in this matter.

The next day, Rocco begins screaming when one of the other children accidentally knocks into him. This kind of behaviour has increased of late and you are unsure of how to manage it considering this new information.

You would like to discuss Rocco’s needs further with the family but feel you also need to seek expert advice on how best to manage Rocco’s situation.

b) Now that you are better informed about Autism, you wish to develop a realistic plan to help Rocco meet the objectives of a behavioural plan.

In the table below, research the resources and considerations you need to develop this plan:

Resources Considerations

The Learning environment (equipment that is suitable to Rocco’s needs)

For example: Rocco may need a quiet space to retreat to.

2.

Budget considerations

For example: Staff may require professional development.

Unruly Behaviour

An Increase in Minor accidents

The children not being engaged in sustained and purposeful play, for example; project work, collaborative work.

The service is committed to embedding National Quality Area 5; relationships with children.

You would like to involve others in discussions about the behaviour issues you have observed.

a) Early Years Learning Framework, Learning Outcome 1, advocates for educators to promote children’s emerging autonomy, interdependence, resilience and sense of agency.

Include at least 3 examples of how you would implement relationship-based strategies to support children to learn about appropriate behaviour.

b) Educators use a behaviour plan for individual children. The behaviour plan reflects the code of ethics to ensure best practice.

What three areas should a behaviour guidance plan clearly link to:

1.
