Child development theories focus on explaining how children change and grow over the course of childhood. Such theories centre on various aspects of development including social, emotional, and cognitive growth. A variety of theorists have worked on developing theories to help explore and explain different aspects of child development. While not all of these theories are fully accepted today, they all have had an important influence on our understanding of child development.
In current practice it is important to have an understanding of a variety of theories and perspectives that can be drawn on to understand how children grow, behave and think.
