Planning an essay

Use this activity to practice planning for an essay. You do not need to write the whole essay, just use the scaffolding template to jot down what you intend to address.

Essay question

Hemingway uses his character Santiago to symbolise his personal views and values on life. In his battle with the sea, the old man displays honour, courage, endurance and dignity. Santiago survives his battle against the sea through these traits and pure self-reliance but ultimately he is not successful. Using Santiago as an example, discuss what the true definition of success is in an individual’s journey.
