As multimedia applications become more prevalent (videophones, multimedia books, videogames, video conferencing) the files travelling the net are getting bigger and slower. One way in which to compensate for this is by coding and compressing files. This comprehensive book covers all of the International Standards for coding and compression, both approved and emerging. It provides coverage of techniques, concepts and principles, and also discusses the international standards in place that ensure the different systems developed using these techniques can communicate. Two appendices describe the different systems and software related to these standards and provide information available on the Internet (ftp sites, WWW addresses, networks, etc).
