Theory for Practice
The book presents and explains the general theory of strategy, and demonstrates the relevance of that theory to the real world of military practice and operations . It explains what strategy is and how it relates to politics and warfare. The volume is is not simply about the theory of strategy, rather it aims to make a substantive and significant contribution to that theory. It takes as its starting the point the classic theorists - for example, Clausewitz and SunTzu - and uses their theories to build a new and challenging theory in its own right. Strategy is explained as a theory for action. Strategy has a general theory, applicable to all times, places, and
situations, while that theory finds reflection in the particular theories that are the real historical strategies adopted and practiced , as well as malpracticed , by belligerents of all kinds , from empires to terrorist groups. The book is accessibly written while at the same time making a sophisticated contribution to our understanding of this perennial area of human activity. The text rests on the claim that strategic theory has only one function, to assist practice.
